British Open Sombo Competition - Sittingbourne

On Saturday the 24 th March 2007, the Norfolk Sombo Association , had a small team of students entered in the British Open Sombo Championships, which was held in Sittingbourne, Kent. Attending this competition were established Sombo wrestling clubs from Sittingbourne, Essex, and competitors from France, Lithuania and Russia.
All of the students had a successful trip bringing back a collection of medals and valuable experience. The following medals were won by our competitors :-

Junior Boys 9 – 13 :-  Open Group B               Silver Medal – Thomas Moore
Boys Group 14 - 16 -   Open Group A             Silver Medal  - Daniel Storer
Boys Group 14 – 16 – Open Group B              Bronze Medal – Spencer Evans Webster
Youth  Group 16 – 18 – Open Group A           Silver Medal – Spencer Evans Webster

Senior Men Group 2 - Middle Weight   Silver Medal – Robert Brown
Senior Men – Veterans - Heavyweight Un-placed - Graham Mann

  
Graham would like to congratulate all who took part in this competition, especially Thomas who in his first competition had to fight a tricky young Russian competitor. For Daniel this year he consolidated his reputation by winning his Silver after fighting in this age group last year. Spencer fought well in all his fights and was unlucky with some of the referee’s decisions.
In the Senior categories Robert out performed his rivals using his competition experience from the other styles he is skilled in and in the Veterans group all categories were mixed together and Graham had a couple of good competitions with a Lithuanian and an American, both of which were lost on points.
The Competition was hosted by the British Sombo Federation’s club based in Sittingbourne, who's Senior coach Martin Clarke said that he was very impressed by the way all the Norfolk youngsters competed and fought for every point and was very pleased to have the Norfolk Sombo Association team at this event for the third time. Event Organiser Keith Costa also praised the Norfolk Students for their efforts.
In the end a successful day with everybody returning  with only a couple of bruises and maybe a stiff neck (Spenny) ….       
Now for the Norfolk Championship  !
