Gorleston's Sombo Club Holds Local Inter-Club Competition

On Sunday the 30th March 2008, the Norfolk Sombo Association , held an open competition for it’s sister clubs students at the Church Lane community centre in Gorleston. Students from the All Styles Martial Arts Group of clubs entered in series of groups and competed against each other in a Sombo competition. The Norfolk Sombo Association is also affiliated to the Sombo UK association and holds regular training sessions every month at the venue. All of the students had a good hard working training session in the morning with the competition held after the lunchtime break.

The following results were achieved in the groups by the competitors :-

All the points which were scored by the competitors in the competitions were recorded to be able to award a club winner award , which was awarded as;

First Place –  Bradwell All Styles MA Club (Bw)  
Second Place –  Belton O Yama Ryu Club (Be)
Third Place – O Yama Ryu   (O)

The Norfolk Sombo Associations head coach Graham Mann, would like to congratulate all who took part in this competition, especially those who were trying the style for the first time, and how everyone had to fight for every point. He would also like to thank Daniel Storer for all his help in keeping everybody organised and busy during the training session and Sarah Barber for giving up her Sunday to be timekeeper and scorer during the competition. Graham also welcomed all the students back to the venue on Sunday the 6 th of April and the 4 th of May for the next two normal training sessions, where the students can learn some more techniques,  which can be used in the clubs next competition , which is to be held in September.
Sombo wrestling is a style of jacket wrestling, from Russia, similar in style to Freestyle and Olympic wrestling and several other martial arts, including Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The sport involves both throwing and ground work and a version of the sport was developed by the Russian army as their version of self defense, which is where the name Sombo comes from.
The Norfolk Sombo Association is a registered member club of Sombo UK and is affiliated to the “All Styles Martial Arts Group” of local martial arts clubs.
